Ziele, Inhalte und Methode der Lehrveranstaltung

Slave Trade and Slavery in Eastern Europe examines the systems of slavery and human trafficking across the Byzantine, Ottoman, and Russian Empires, as well as the Romanian principalities and Ukraine. The course explores the legal, economic, and social dimensions of slavery, tracing the networks that supplied enslaved individuals and the roles they played in different societies. Students will analyze a variety of secondary literature and historical sources to understand the persistence and transformation of slavery in the region. Through comparative and interdisciplinary approaches, the course highlights Eastern Europe’s place in the broader history of global slavery.

Art der Leistungskontrolle und erlaubte Hilfsmittel

Regular attendance and active involvement in discussions in class, based on the weekly assigned readings (primary sources and secondary literature), are essential. Students will be asked to formulate three questions that encourage class discussion. In addition, each student is expected to do one oral presentation in class on a selected primary source or secondary literature and submit three short critical essays (response papers, 1-2 pages max.), related to the main themes examined in the literature the course.
Note: The instruction and course assignments will be in English, and students are expected to have a good command of English.

Mindestanforderungen und Beurteilungsmaßstab

The final grade consists of the following components:
- Regular attendance (max. two absences) and participation in discussions in class (20%)
- Formulation of discussion questions (15%)
- Oral presentation (20%)
- Short written assignments (45%)

Prüfungsstoff

There is no exam for this course. Students need to do the relevant assignments during the semester.
