Information

Ziele, Inhalte und Methode der Lehrveranstaltung

The writing of a seminar paper (first version and final version) based on primary sources (and not secondary literature) on select topics in late antique and medieval Japan.

Art der Leistungskontrolle und erlaubte Hilfsmittel

Several short written assignments, two versions (first and final) of the seminar paper, very short oral presentations, participation in class discussion.

Mindestanforderungen und Beurteilungsmaßstab

Constant presence in the seminar, and participation, for extra points (up to 10).
3 short papers (2 pages) for 5 % of the points each (0-15 points) due as stated in syllabus (always before class).
1 close reading of a passage in the core primary source chosen for the seminar paper for 10% of the points (0-10 points)
1 commentary (written and oral) of a classmate´s first version (Erstfassung) of the seminar paper for 15% (0-15 points)
1 first version of the seminar paper for 25% of the points (0-25 points) . This has to be handed in on time, otherwise you fail the class.
1 final version of the seminar paper for 35% of the points (0-35 points), due mid to late July.
Written assignments can be produced in German, French, or English.

Prüfungsstoff

The final paper should be about 40.000 characters (± 5%), including blanks, footnotes, title page, table of contents, bibliography (excluding charts and images). This is about 20 pages, double spaced with Times New Roman 12points font. Plus a short abstract. You can go over this limit by 5 pages if it makes sense and if you write to the point. No Logorrhea!
The final paper like all written assignments in this class can be in English, German, or French.

Primary sources distributed in class or via Moodle. Recommended background reading: Souyri, World upside down; Cambridge History of Japan (online via the Uni Library)
