Information

Ziele, Inhalte und Methode der Lehrveranstaltung

The Seminar will introduce students to the history and historiography of the Independence Movements in the Americas in comparative perspective, and the variety of revolutionary movements will be discussed which led to the creation of independent (nation-) states. We examine the American Revolution, the revolution in Saint-Domingue/Haiti, the set of revolutions in Spanish America, and the absence of a "genuine" revolution in Brazil.

Art der Leistungskontrolle und erlaubte Hilfsmittel

The Seminar will be taught in an interactive manner, and students are expected to fully participate in reading and discussing the texts and documents, as well as to turn in two short research-papers. Students will select their topic for research, they will write and present their findings, and will submit a Seminar-paper at the end of the semester, the final version of which is due July 27, 2015.

Grading is based on regular class attendance (students will not miss class more than twice) and the quality of classroom discussion (20%), on two short research papers (35%), and on the Seminar-paper (45%).

Mindestanforderungen und Beurteilungsmaßstab

After successfully completing this Seminar, students will be familiar with the revolutionary movements in the Americas, they will have evaluated the differences and similarities among the various independence movements and the formation of individual (nation-) states, and they will have achieved a basic knowledge of tendencies in historiography for the period in question.

Prüfungsstoff

Students will read and study documents and scholarly articles dealing with the various Independence Movements in the Americas in comparative perspective. All classroom discussions will be held in English, and the research papers as well as the Seminar-paper will have to be written and submitted in English.

No electronic devices are permitted in this class - no computers, tablets, mobile phones, etc. This will allow students to focus on discussion and debate in class without being distraced and disturbed by e-mail-messages, or other news provided e.g. by social media, mobile phones, etc. This prescription is certainly not intended to limit or restrict the activities of students, but rather to enable students to participate in and to concentrate on classroom activities.
