Information

Ziele, Inhalte und Methode der Lehrveranstaltung

The Seminar will be taught in an interactive manner, and it will introduce students to the history and historiography of Constitutionalism, Federalism, and Republicanism in American history from the Peace of Paris (1783) to the ratification of the 14th Amendment to the Constitution (1868). Students will select their topics for research, and they will examine in their papers the meanings of the three terms in question from various historical, legal, and cultural pespectives.

Art der Leistungskontrolle und erlaubte Hilfsmittel

Regular class attendance is mandatory, and students are expected to fully participate in classroom discussion. Students will present the findings of their research in class. - Important notice: No electronic devices are permitted in this BA-Seminar from May 12, the first unit in which students present the rough draft of their Essays, until June 30, the last classroom session in this Seminar. This policy will allow students to focus on discussions and debates in class without being distraced and disturbed by e-mail-messages, surfing the Internet, etc.

Mindestanforderungen und Beurteilungsmaßstab

After successfully completing tthe Seminar, students will be familiar with various approaches to and key aspects of American Constitutionalism, and they will have achieved a basic knowledge of tendencies in historiography for the period in question. - Grading is based on regular class attendance and the quality of classroom discussion (20%), on the presentation in class of the rough draft of the Essay (35%), and on the final draft of the Essay (45%).

Prüfungsstoff

Students will read, study, and comment on documents and scholarly articles dealing with important aspects and selected case-studies relevant to American Constitutionalism and the Law of Nations. Classroom discussions will be held in English, and short papers, the rough draft, and the final draft of the Essay will all be written in English.

Literatur

Bibliographical information, guidlines for the writing of an Essay, as well as other texts and documents will be provided on Moodle.
