Information

Ziele, Inhalte und Methode der Lehrveranstaltung

The Seminar will introduce students to the rich history of culture and politics in the United States from the 1830s to the 1930s, from Transcendentalist Philosophy to the "New Deal for the Arts". Students are expected to fully participate in classroom discussion. They will select a toppic fr research, they will present their findingsin an oral presentation, and they will submit a written Seminar paper. - NOTICE: During all class-units in which students deliver their oral presentations (from December 15) no electronic devices are permitted in this Seminar; this policy will enable students to fully focus on discussons and debates in class undisturbed. - Further information for this Seminar will be provided on Moodle (access to Moodle opens October 13).

Art der Leistungskontrolle und erlaubte Hilfsmittel

Classroom discussions will be held in English, and all assignments, texts and papers will have to be written in English. Grading is based on regular class attendence and the quality of classroom discussion, on the written assignments, on the presentation in class of the Rough Draft of the paper, and on the quality of the final version of the written Seminar paper.

Mindestanforderungen und Beurteilungsmaßstab

After successfully completing this Seminar, students will be familiar with various aspects and of various cultural and political achievements in the history of the American Republic from the Age of Jackson to the Presidency of Franklin D. Roosevelt. Students will also have acquired a basic knowledge of the historiography for the period in question.

Prüfungsstoff

Students will read, study, and comment on articles, texts, and documents dealing wth selected aspects in culture and politics of the United Stes of Amerca. - Based on their own individual research, students will submit a research paper in which they sum up their findings during the process of research for a topic in American Culture and Politics which they selected for themselves.
