Information

Ziele, Inhalte und Methode der Lehrveranstaltung

This course is designed to teach graduate students how to create short-form videos that communicate their research to a wider audience. The course will cover both the writing and technical aspects of video production, with an emphasis on using YouTube as a platform and cover topics including:
Choosing a topic and developing a storyboard
Writing a script that is clear, concise, and engaging
Shooting and editing video footage
Using special effects and graphics
Promoting and distributing your videos
By the end of the course, students will be able to create short-form videos that are both informative and engaging. They will also be able to critically assess the videos of others and identify the strengths and weaknesses of different approaches to video production. This will be done individually and in groups and in consultation with professional YouTubers who work in academic-adjacent genres of online filmmaking.

Art der Leistungskontrolle und erlaubte Hilfsmittel

There are three main video assignments, one which is an adaptation of a student's previous written work (30%), one that is a short-form vertical video (10%) and one that is a more elaborate video done as part of a group project (40%). Participation and weekly short assignments make up the other 20% of the grade.
