Ziele, Inhalte und Methode der Lehrveranstaltung
During the years between 1857 and 1923 a couple of Empires came to their ends - Mughal, Brasilian, 2nd. French, Chinese, Austrian-Hungarian, Russian, Ottoman. May we see a global trend, a "victory of the nation-state", or more a new legitimation for power and ideological fight against an enemy? Who were the decisive political actors of Empires and national movements?
Art der Leistungskontrolle und erlaubte Hilfsmittel
common reading, presenting and analysing short texts or sources, presentations of cases (Referate), Hausarbeiten (similar to written essays, but with some specific points.)
Mindestanforderungen und Beurteilungsmaßstab
Learn about structures and roles of the nation-state within the international system in face of a possible, if obviously unsuccesful alternative.
Prüfungsstoff
In the first meeting presentations by the prof., in the second common reading of Burbank/Cooper: Empires in World Histoy; in the third presentations of short texts, sources and arguments by students; in the fourth and fifth presentations of cases by students, Hausarbeit.
