Ziele, Inhalte und Methode der Lehrveranstaltung

The Seminar will introduce students to the history and historiography of the American presidency in the Early Republic. We will examine how the precidency was conceived at the Philadelphia Constitutional Convention in 1787, and we will investigate the ways in which the first six presidents have understood the opportunities and limits of America's highest political office. - NOTICE: During all class-units in which students deliver their oral presentations no electronic devices are permitted in this Seminar; this policy will enable students to fully focus on discussons and debates in class undisturbed.

Art der Leistungskontrolle und erlaubte Hilfsmittel

The Seminar will be taught in an active manner, and students are expeced to fully participate in reading and discussing the texts and documents we will study together, and they will have to turn in two short research-papers. Students will select their topic for research, the ywill presnet their findings in class, and they will submit by the end of January 2018 a Seminar-paper (Rough Draft), the final version (Final Draft) is due February 25.

Mindestanforderungen und Beurteilungsmaßstab

After successfully completing this Seminar, students will be familiar with the origins and the actual state of the first six presidencies, and they will heve evaluated the differences and similarties among the six personalities who held this office from 1789 until 1829. Sudents will also have mastered a basic knowledge of historiographical tendencies for the period in question.

Prüfungsstoff

Students will read and study documents and scholarly articles dealing with the early American presdency. All classroom discussion will be held in English, and all assignments, research-papers, and the final Seminar-paper will have to be written in English.

Bibliographical information will be provided during the Semester, mostly on Moodle.
