Information

Ziele, Inhalte und Methode der Lehrveranstaltung

The excursion is to the Ieper/Ypres area of western Belgium, the scene of fierce battles in every year of the First World War save 1916, takes five days. Two days are reserved for travel, and three full days for tours of the battlefields and museums. Total costs, about 400-450 Euros, include flights, train journeys, four nights’ accommodation with breakfast and the use of a bus to take the group around the region. However, as far as possible, most of the battlefield-sightseeing will be on foot so that good walking shoes and rain gear are required. The three full days will focus on the following:
1. Ypres town and the Flanders Field Museum.
2. The Mesen/Messines area, with visits to the Irish Peace Park and a battlefield tour concentrating on the Battle of Messines (7 June 1917)
3. Places to the north and east of Ypres, scenes of the Third Battle of Ypres (July-November 1917),including the cemeteries Langemarck (German) and Tyne Cot (British), and the Passchendaele War Museum in Zonnebeke

Art der Leistungskontrolle und erlaubte Hilfsmittel

Grades awarded for this teaching unit depend on the interest shown by the participant, how he or she contributed to the success of the venture, and, finally, on a 10-page essay which is to include a) impressions of the trip, and b) a treatment of some aspect of the fighting in the region from 1914 to 1918.

Mindestanforderungen und Beurteilungsmaßstab

The aim of the excursion is to acquaint students with battle conditions on the Western Front during WW1, to provide information on how the soldiers lived and to demonstrate why this section of front was so important (for both sides). The main emphasis will be on the daily life of the common soldier. Naturally, the excursion should encourage students to consider taking an aspect of the war in the region as a theme for a post-graduate thesis.

Prüfungsstoff

During two preparatory talks the excursion leader will explain the importance of the region for the outcome of the war on the Western Front. Essay topics will be distributed to the students for study prior to participating in the excursion.
