Aims and Content
Epistemological and methodological positions in the theoretical and historical social sciences frequently are classified into pro- and anti-naturalistic positions. This classification is based on views regarding the applicability of the methods of the natural sciences in the theoretical social sciences and in history. This lecture provides an introduction to different epistemological and methodological positions defended in the historical and theoretical social sciences. Frequently these positions are the result of open problems in social science and historical disciplines and authors hope that by solving these methodological problems they will be able to solve open disciplinary problems as well. The lecture also examines whether those anti- and pronaturalistic positions are attempts to solve the so called problems of induction and demarcation for the historical and theoretical social sciences. Diligent students will learn to make sense of and evaluate the historical background, achievements, main criticisms and developments of those controversies which still cover much ground in contemporary discussions.
Method
Teaching consists in one unbroken 90-minute lecture. Students are required to contribute in a lively manner to discussions at all classes and to pass a final written test.
