A history of western Europe from ca 1050 to ca 1500. The lectures will follow principally the themes of politics and religion, as befits an era that begins with the eleventh-century ecclesiastical reform movements and the investiture controversy (Investitursstreit) and ends with a late medieval church in crisis, on the eve of the Protestant Reformation.

Mindestanforderungen und Beurteilungsmaßstab

The course aims not so much at conveying facts (although facts exist, are important, and students will be tested on some facts) as to introduce students to models and theories that historians use to look at long-term processes or moments in Western European History.

Prüfungsstoff

Lecture and discussion (with some introduction to contemporary sources), iconographic documentation through Powerpoint.
