Ziele, Inhalte und Methode der Lehrveranstaltung

In this course we will look at the history of the maritime Silk Roads, with a special focus on India-China relations between the 8th and 20th centuries. After an overview of the main historical events and theories, we will look at the main ideas (including religions), goods and people moving between East Asia and the Indian Ocean, and how they build a "connected history" of these two macro-regions.
Students will also be guided through the main secondary and primary sources for the study of these cultures, and the methodological issues related to them.

Art der Leistungskontrolle und erlaubte Hilfsmittel

Students will be guided toward the composition of seminar papers, and will be evaluated on the base of the following assignments throughout the semester:

- regular and active participation in class (5%)
- weekly assignments (40%)
- presentation in class (15%)
- seminar essay (40%)

Mindestanforderungen und Beurteilungsmaßstab

Below 50 points (inclusive of 50) means a failing grade (5)
Students can miss up to two (2) classes. Any further absences will require a doctor's note or might reflect badly on your attendance grade.
