Ziele, Inhalte und Methode der Lehrveranstaltung

This course will provide essential knowledge about what the current researchers and experts do to open up their (digital) research and what they need to think about in Digital Humanities. In particular, the seminar will focus on the data-driven research and project for Open Research and Open Science and discuss common research cycle from data perspective. The lecture is designed not only for historical research, but also interdisciplinary research which Digital Humanities has promoted over the recent years, and the history students can learn new perspectives. By the end of this course, they will be able to think critically about the trend of research theories and methodologies in Digital Humanities, and to use the knowledge for various purposes including their own research projects during their studies and/or the management of research projects in their future jobs. If the students are interested to be a professional Digital Humanities researcher and/or an expert in the Cultural Heritage institutions (museums, archives, libraries etc) and Research Infrastructures, working with IT, this course is especially useful. The main topics are:

· Research and data lifecycle
· Open Data, Open Access, Open Source, Open Research, Open Science
· Metadata management and search engine in relation to resource discovery
· Standards and interoperability
· Application Programming Interface (API)
· Digital services useful for research as well as legal issues for data and tool reuse
· Research Infrastructures (RI) and Virtual Research Environments (VRE)
· Data visualization and presentation
· Data archiving and preservation
· Data-driven research strategies
· Web Analytics

The seminar is organised in various forms including lectures, group discussions, hands-on exercises, and assignments. Moodle may be used. The students are encouraged to bring their laptop computers.

Art der Leistungskontrolle und erlaubte Hilfsmittel

Mindestanforderungen und Beurteilungsmaßstab

No minimum requirements except that the seminar is in English (English is not the main criteria for assessment, but is required for assignments. It is recommended to improve academic English all the time.) If the students have used the Moodle of the university before, it may be advantageous. Although there will be some technical exercises with computers, instructions are provided and the lecture also discusses on theories. Therefore, students with less technical experience are encouraged to register to gain new skills and knowledge.
