Information

Ziele, Inhalte und Methode der Lehrveranstaltung

This MA level methodology workshop is aimed at providing students with an introduction to the methodologies of prosopography (the collection, storage, and analysis of historical person data) and social network analysis (the study of personal networks and the actors and relationships they represent) in the context of studying historic societies. This will include both theoretical and practical elements, including discussions of how person data can be produced from a range of source types, different models for storing person data and their implications for historians, how social network graphs are produced from such data, and what conclusions and insights historians can draw from these data sources. The aim of the course is to illuminate these often misunderstood methodologies and to provide students with a more critical approach to data in their own research. The course will make use of case studies from the periods of late antiquity, the middle ages, and the early modern period, however students are welcome to use historical and literary material familiar to them in their work during the course.
In addition to gaining a better understanding of the methodologies of prosopography and social network analysis this course will provide students with a range of approaches to complex historical data. Students will explore the problems of historical sources (e.g. their often fragmentary nature) and the decision making process that underlies the production of data from these sources. The juxtaposition of prosopography and social network analysis is aimed at providing students with a broad theoretical discussion drawn from two inter-related disciplines which are not often considered side by side. This course will provide students with a broader toolbox of digital and theoretical approaches to understanding person and network data, where it comes from, and what to do with it.

Art der Leistungskontrolle und erlaubte Hilfsmittel

Students in this course will be assessed through continuous assessment. Students will be graded based on their completion of several homework assignments throughout the term (60%), a final project completed after the end of classes (30%), and their level of participation and engagement in class activities (10%).

The lecturers reserve the right to mark down assignments that are handed in late without prior notice.

Mindestanforderungen und Beurteilungsmaßstab

The class will be fully taught in and assessed in English, and the ability to write clearly in English is a requirement. Previous courses in medieval history or digital humanities are not required (though may of course make grounding in some of the material easier).

Prüfungsstoff

There is no written examination: the final assessment piece will be discussed with students and produced on a topic of their choice relevant to the themes and methods covered in classes.
