As the epidemic situation in Austria is currently deteriorating again on a daily basis, it is not yet possible to give a binding indication of the form in which the individual course dates will be held. Depending on the requirements of the Rectorate, the course will be held both on site, possibly in small groups or online. We will also offer one-on-one consultation sessions if needed. In any case, the first meeting on October 13, 2021 will take place on site in room 41 of the main building of the University, where we will discuss how to proceed together. Please check your mails on October 12 in the evening in case of last-minute changes.

Ziele, Inhalte und Methode der Lehrveranstaltung

This seminar has an interdisciplinary orientation. We will discuss and analyze historical facts in their social context in relation to their normative evaluation as "genocide" or “ethnocide”. On the one hand, it will be shown that the normative level shapes the "factual" interpretation of historical events and that this framework at the same time represents a phenomenon that has become historical and that was or is never "unambiguous".
In the main section "legal background“, the normative debates about the extension of the concepts of genocide and ethnocide to "cultural genocide" will be presented. This is therefore a central part of the seminar. It is precisely the coverage of "cultural genocide" that allows for a focus on structural situations that go beyond the narrowing of the concept of genocide to violent crime sequences.

Art der Leistungskontrolle und erlaubte Hilfsmittel

As a brief prep work, all students will have to write answers to a few questions referring to an introductory text.
Students are expected to write a scientific paper (with critical footnotes, 70.000 characters + abstract). The students have to submit a provisional research paper latest at January 10, 2022, and the final version of their works latest at March 31, 2022.

Mindestanforderungen und Beurteilungsmaßstab

The seminar aims to teach the students how to elaborate in terms of content and methodology the correct processing of a scientific topic.
Criterion for assessment: comments: 30%, scientific paper: 70%.

Prüfungsstoff

Guided research, discussion, scientific criticism, writing and presenting the research paper.

Literatur

A lot of basic literature will be uploaded on moodle.
