Prüfungsimmanente Lehrveranstaltung

Students will read and study a selection of documents and scholarly articles dealing with decisive moments in American history (1800-1950). A very good command of the English language is a precondition for class attendance.

Please note: This class will be taught in English, and we will read and study texts and documents in English; however, "Fremdsprachen in der Geschichtswissenschaft" is intended primarily for students whose mother tongue is not English!

Information

Ziele, Inhalte und Methode der Lehrveranstaltung

Students will read, study, and discuss relevant and decisive texts and documents in American History, among others the 1823 Monroe Doctrine, the 1848 Seneca Falls Declaration, the 1896 Supreme Court decision in Plessy v. Ferguson, Wilson's 1918 Fourteen Points, and the 1941 Atlantic Charter.

Art der Leistungskontrolle und erlaubte Hilfsmittel

This class will be taught in an interactive manner, and students are expected to fully participate in reading and discussing the texts and documents, as well as to turn in their weekly assignments on time.

Grading is based on regular class attendance (students who miss class more than twice will receive a failing grade), quality of discussion in class, nine written assignments, and a written exam at the end of class (January 30, 2015).
