Ziele, Inhalte und Methode der Lehrveranstaltung

American historians dealing with the history of the United States are rethinking now for a long time the old concepts of a self-sufficient Nation-State and of an "American exceptionalism". Many historians reject these approaches as inadequate, and to "think beyond the borders" is now more than ever before seen as both challenging and rewarding. However, an emphasis on America's global interconnectedness is much older than we sometimes assume following the contemporary debates.

In this course we will read articles and chapters selected from three books recently published and dealing with American History in global context: Anthony Molho and Gordon S. Wood (eds.), Imagined Histories. American Historians Interpret the Past (1998); Thomas Bender (ed.), Rethinking American History in a Global Age (2002), and Thomas Bender, A Nation Among Nations. America's Place in World History (2006).
