Information

Ziele, Inhalte und Methode der Lehrveranstaltung

The European Middle Ages, from the Roman empire's conversion to Christianity to the eve of the Protestant Reformation, through the eleventh-century reform and the Great Plague. Focus: Religion and power, identities. We look in particular at the mutual influence of Roman culture and Christianity, barbarian culture and Christianity, the relationship between lay power and ecclesiastical institutions, how groups inscribed themselves in religious notions of the order of the world, and the impact of new forces on religion, power, and society. Throughout, it is assumed that Christianity is a historical phenomenon, so changed with time.

Art der Leistungskontrolle und erlaubte Hilfsmittel

One final exam (as is usual, four versions proposed over six months). Students will be tested on the lecture contents and on the readings assigned. Typically, the exam will involve identifications and explanations of images or objects (shown in class), a short essay question bearing on one lecture and related readings, and a longer, synthetic essay question involving information and concepts from several lectures and the attached readings.

Mindestanforderungen und Beurteilungsmaßstab

Introduction to the broad characteristics and trends of the European Middle Ages, emphasis on basic facts but much more on structures and processes, introduction to theories and methods allowing explanation and understanding of historical phenomena.

Prüfungsstoff

Lecture, readings at home (textbook excerpts plus excerpts from primary sources). Students are encouraged to take simultaneously to this class GR 070186 (Buc, in English) for more cohesion in their learning. Other medieval GRs are also a solution, including Alexandra Kaar´s (which keeps close to my GR, while in German)
