Ziele, Inhalte und Methode der Lehrveranstaltung

During the course of this seminar will shall explore some important aspects of the Indian Ocean's history from medieval times to the present with a focus on the late medieval and early modern epoch. The seminar traces the development of Indian Ocean as a stage of economic dealings, political rivalries and cultural exchanges. India and her European linkages will form a major concern of inquiry. Topics covered in the seminar range from peaceful trading networks, military confrontations, communication patterns between different civilizations to the general discussion of the longe durée change of a crucial world region.

Weekly assignments and participation in class room discussion (60%), final essay (40%)

Mindestanforderungen und Beurteilungsmaßstab

Knowledge and orientation about the Indian Ocean region and its interpretation in recent historical research. Ability to handle questions, theories and narratives of cross-cultural and Global History. Ability to deal critically with political and socio-economic questions. Ability to search and judge information in a professional way.
