Information

Ziele, Inhalte und Methode der Lehrveranstaltung

The correct handling of data is at the heart of the Digital Humanities. Practical skills – from data cleaning to data analysis and visualization – are the prerequisite for independent work in the field as well as the basis for an informed dialogue with professional data scientists and software developers. The course will introduce students to the basics of the Python programming language and its most important libraries, thereby leading them towards their use for their own projects. – No previous programming skills are required. All students are asked to bring their own laptops (no tablets).
This class is supported by Datacamp (https://www.datacamp.com/) for Python programming and introductory data management exercises. - We will spend very limited time on matters regarding the use of the command line / shell and the file system of your computer. Students not familiar those arguments are encouraged to sign up for the course "Computational background skills" (M. Durco et al., blocked in March), and/or to work through tutorials like https://swcarpentry.github.io/shell-novice/.

Art der Leistungskontrolle und erlaubte Hilfsmittel

The final mark will be a combination of in-class participation (20%), homework assignments (40%), and the final project (40%). Grading criteria will be communicated during the course.
