Ziele, Inhalte und Methode der Lehrveranstaltung


This Guided Readings course intends to give students an immersive experience in the medieval world by taking them into history itself. The course will center on a series of in-class roleplaying games where students will first read about the past through primary source readings outside of class and then participate in a series of multi-week simulations that place the students in a particular historical moment and have them grapple with difficult issues as real historical figures from that time and place.

In this class, students will deliberate over cases before the high court of the crusader Kingdom of Jerusalem, lead a medieval inquisition in a remote village in the Pyrenees, attempt to survive the Black Death as an English city council, and meet the world in a Mongol Qurultai.

Originally this class was going to be joined with an identical class being held at Tel Aviv University by Dr. Ahuva Liberles – however due to the ongoing war in Gaza, their university term was being switched only begin at the end of May. We still hope to play one game jointly in June, dependent – of course – on events in the Middle East.

Art der Leistungskontrolle und erlaubte Hilfsmittel

There will be a written component of each game – normally a combination of a reflection essay before the game, and written speeches during the game. Collectively the writing and participation grades will be the core of the assessment for this class. Bonus points will be given for ‘winning’ each of the games.
