Information

Ziele, Inhalte und Methode der Lehrveranstaltung

This course
1) Investigates how non European, global topics are presented in museums
2) How is European colonialism, imperialism and orientalism addressed in museums?
3) How the lines of inclusion and exclusion are drawn between the “we” and the “other”
4) How global connections are made visible (or neglected) for topics of apparently local, or national reach
5) What does “museum” mean, what should it be, how does the institution change against the background of global change? Are there significant regional differences in addressing the global in museums?
6) What are the impacts of a global approach on the stories that are told in museums?
Investigations will concentrate on museums with a focus on History and Society; a special focus is on the New World Museum WELTMUSEUM WIEN.
We will also investigate collection strategies and look behind the history and politics of acquisition.
The teaching and communication language will will be English. Basic German is recommended for visits in Viennese museums.

Art der Leistungskontrolle und erlaubte Hilfsmittel

Grading: based on active participation in class and in museums, common readings, oral presentations, final paper.
