Ziele, Inhalte und Methode der Lehrveranstaltung

This lecture is designed to give an introduction to the historiography of global history. We will try and give a general overview of the emergence of global history within the field of historical studies as well as of the main approaches and epochal studies in this field. Starting with a general analysis of the main approaches in the field and a discussion of the debates on the Great Divergence we will move on to discussing specific topics that have been very prominent in the study of global history.

Mindestanforderungen und Beurteilungsmaßstab

Students shall become familiar with the complex topics, theories and narratives of global history and start to reflect critically on their importance. Students shall develop an understanding for the complexity of so-called big questions, how and why historians try to answer them.

Prüfungsstoff

Each course will include a lecture and a discussion based on accompanying readings.
Case studies from different regions shall help to understand the different angles of the study of global history.
