Ziele, Inhalte und Methode der Lehrveranstaltung

The integration processes in Western and Eastern Europe were in historiography often treated as two rather distinct phenomena. Only recently, with growing use of networked based concepts, the historians started to point to the interconnections and interlinkages between the two. Introducing the students to recent methodological debates and research trends, this Seminar traces the interlocked history of integration processes in Europe in six decades from 1944 to 2004. While the first date marks the birth of the British Western Union concept which gave rise to the Brussels Pact, the earliest transnational body in the Western Europe, the 2004 saw the entry of the former Soviet bloc countries to the EU. Yet, the Seminar will go beyond the obvious subjects such as history of international organisations and will demonstrate that the integration processes must be understood as a multilevel process including the technological and infrastructural integration or the birth of consumer societies and ecological movements.

Goal of the Seminar is to make the students familiar with the latest secondary literature, strengthen their capabilities of conducting independent research as well as fostering their presentation and writing skills.

Art der Leistungskontrolle und erlaubte Hilfsmittel

consists of following components: active participation at the classes (20%), 1-2 pp. outline of seminar paper, (10%), 20 mins oral presentation (20%), 3-5 mins oral commentary (10%), seminar paper up to 20-30 pp. (40%)

Presentations and papers can be delivered both in German and English.
