Information

Ziele, Inhalte und Methode der Lehrveranstaltung

The idea of the course is to introduce students to fundamental theoretical perspectives, potential sources and archives, as well as methods in Global History. This course will continue the training of students in basic skills of scientific research (search and critical assessment of secondary sources, ability to draft an abstract and bibliography for a research paper, proper usage of different citation styles, etc...).
Training these skills and acquiring the knowledge in theory and methodology will be embedded in a regional and comparative focus. Two world regions, Africa and Latin America, are introduced as fundamental for global historical processes both in their own right and in relation to transfers and connections between them. The focus on texts on these thematic fields should enable the students to build connections from concrete examples to broader theoretical issues and debates in the field of Global History.

Art der Leistungskontrolle und erlaubte Hilfsmittel

The students will be expected to engage in continuous work throughout the semester with weekly reading and writing assignments as well as in class presentations, discussions and a final paper.
The final paper is going to be a draft research proposal (topic, theories, methods, sources, archives) on a topic within the scope of the classes thematical frame, selected individually by the students. The set up of such a proposal is going to be inroduced and trained in class.

Mindestanforderungen und Beurteilungsmaßstab

The aims of the course are manifold. They should acquire fundamental knowledge on theories, methods and sources in Global History. Thje courses task is to lay the foundations on which all the subsequent research tasks in the course of the MA studies can be mastered and, ultimately, the MA-thesis can successfully be finished.

Students should train how to:
critically reflect academic literature (in abstracts, excerpts, reviews etc.)
search for and evaluate specific literature and sources
communicate knowledge in oral presentations and written work
create a bibliography
write a draft research proposal
work in groups and individually

Prüfungsstoff

The course methods are based on the guided reading of a select syllabus. Along this syllabus major methods and theories of global history are going to be discussed and evaluated. Assisted by the course instructors the students are going to take an active part in discussing the literature by presenting texts to their fellow students.
In addition to the reading of relevant literature the course is going to introduce students to relevant sources in global history. Visits to libraries (Department of African Studies, C3 Bibliothek für Entwicklungspolitik etc.) are organised where students will be able to search for materials/sources that can be used for their research proposals.
Both group and individual work will be encouraged. The course is going to be accompanied by an online platform and elements of blended learning.
