Information

Ziele, Inhalte und Methode der Lehrveranstaltung

This class is designed to help master students of global history and global studies to design their master thesis project and start the writing process. It is mandatory for the 2nd year students of the EMGS program but open for students from other programs and curricula of history as well. The class is held in English.
In the first part of the semester, students will get practical insight in doing research in Vienna and finding a supervisor. They will receive information about formal criteria and requirements as well as administrative workflows and timelines for the writing and submission of a master thesis at the University of Vienna.
In the second part of the semester, students will work on the research proposal for their master thesis, present their research ideas in class and learn how to give feedback to their fellow students.
Weekly assignments in academic writing will help the students to design and work on their individual research projects:
(a) describe your research topic
(b) search and summarize relevant literature and draft a bibliography
(c) search your source material and define your corpus
(d) choose and explain your conceptual and/or methodological approach
(e) structure your research and design a table of content
(f) draft three hypotheses or key arguments for your thesis
(g) find a title for your master thesis and write an abstract
(h) write a full thesis proposal

Art der Leistungskontrolle und erlaubte Hilfsmittel

1. active participation and oral feedback on the master thesis project of a fellow student (25%)
2. seven assignments in academic writing (25%)
3. oral presentation of the master thesis project in class (25%)
4. written master thesis proposal (25%)

Mindestanforderungen und Beurteilungsmaßstab

Students may miss up to two classes and up to two assignments. The oral presentation of the master thesis project and the written thesis proposal are mandatory to pass the class.
