Ziele, Inhalte und Methode der Lehrveranstaltung

The aftermath of the dissolution of the Soviet Union is still acutely felt
in Eastern and Central Europe due to the profound symbolic importance its
history yields for many inhabitants of the post-soviet space, as clearly
evident in some of the recent events. This lecture course will offer an
overview of the political, social and cultural history of the Soviet Union
from the October Revolution of 1917 to Gorbachev's reforms and the eventual
dissolution of the Soviet Union in 1991. Of particular importance are the
periods of the civil war, the first years of early industrialisation and
urbanisation, cultural creativity and the New Economic Policy, and Stalin's
consolidation of power. The second part of the course will deal with the
Second World War, post-war reconstruction and the Thaw under Khrushchev in
1950s. The course will finish with the analysis of the period of stagnation
under Brezhnev, the dissident movement and the dissolution of the USSR. In
each relevant case parallels will be drawn between the historical
developments and their relevance to the events in Central and Eastern Europe
today.
