Information

Ziele, Inhalte und Methode der Lehrveranstaltung

This course is designed to provide students with comprehensive knowledge and skills related to the study and analysis of medieval manuscripts through the application of digital tools and techniques. At the end of the course, students will be able to identify scripts used in medieval manuscripts; to apply machine learning methods for artificial palaeography and codicology; to use software for automatic transcription; to catalogue medieval manuscripts, and create digital collections.

17.11.2023: Guest lecture by Dr Damianos Kasotakis (Director of Imaging for the Early Manuscripts Electronic Library).
27.11.2023: Visit to the Department of Manuscripts and Rare Books at the Österreichische Nationalbibliothek with Ass.-Prof. Mag. Dr. Christoph Egger.
17.02.2024: Visit to the library of Heiligenkreuz Abbey with Ass.-Prof. Mag. Dr. Christoph Egger.

Art der Leistungskontrolle und erlaubte Hilfsmittel

- Active participation in class discussion
- Regular preparation for class sessions
- Completion of a written test and an oral examination at the end of the semester
- Attendance to the course

Mindestanforderungen und Beurteilungsmaßstab

Active participation in class discussion and preparation (30%), written test (30%), and oral exam (40%). Each performance is assessed independently. The minimum requirement for positive evaluation is a grade of 51% in each of the assessment categories.

Attendance is mandatory. One excused absence is permitted. Exceeding one absence will result in the course failure unless substantiated by compelling reasons. Missing the first class (06.11.2023) will result in automatic deregistration from the course.
