Information
Ziele, Inhalte und Methode der Lehrveranstaltung
This Proseminar examines European and Mediterranean society in the transitional period between Antiquity and the Middle Ages. The period between c. 300 and c. 1100 marks the collapse or transformation of the Roman Empire, the development of new early medieval religious and ethnic identities, and, by the end of the eleventh century, a new economic and political order around the Mediterranean. The course is oriented around the research of a proseminar paper, on an early medieval subject of your own choice.
Art der Leistungskontrolle und erlaubte Hilfsmittel
Attendance with active participation, careful reading of primary sources and secondary sources, course presentations, research and composition of proseminar research paper.
Mindestanforderungen und Beurteilungsmaßstab
Participation: 25% (Participation, Attendance, Office Hours: 15%, Oral presentations: 10%)
Research Assignments: 25% (Topic Brainstorming: 10%, Bibliographical Essay and Bibliography: 15%)
Final Paper: 50% (Rough Draft: 15%, Final Paper: 35%)

Prüfungsstoff
The course culminates in a research paper on a relevant topic of your own choosing (40.000 characters = about 20 pages).
