Information

Ziele, Inhalte und Methode der Lehrveranstaltung

When the Habsburg monarchy disintegrated at the end of World War I, it was far more than a political phenomenon—it directly affected the lives of millions of ordinary people across the whole of East Central Europe. The void left by the defunct state in the middle of ensuing violence, political vacuum and economic crisis gave rise to many expectations and competing state-building projects aiming at reorganizing the region under the flagship of “self-determination”. Questioning paradigmatic concepts such as political crisis, rupture/continuity, transformation, postimperial transition, this seminar will allow students to delve into the formative years of 1914-1923 that reshaped the political map of Europe.
Presenting a vast array of primary sources and discussing the recent scholarship, the seminar will also provide the occasion to reflect on history-writing, addressing the issue of methodological nationalism, teleological thinking and micro-/meso-/macrolevels.

Art der Leistungskontrolle und erlaubte Hilfsmittel

The aim of the seminar is to learn to write a scientific work based on a historical topic. Students will choose a topic they will progressively elaborate along the semester. They will be guided in their research of primary sources as well as secondary literature, and learn how to exploit them: the semester is designed to enable them to learn step-by-step the process of academic writing.

During the first half of the semester, students will have to prepare weekly short reports related to the reading assignments (Leseprotokoll). In the second half of the semester, they will each present in max. 10 minutes a preliminary analysis of their reflection and sources, that will be discussed together with the other students. These oral presentations will be the basis of the PS-work (Seminararbeit).

Students are expected to read all the assigned texts before each class, and to actively contribute to class discussion.

Assessment will be based on:

- the active participation to the class and the discussions
- the oral presentation and the final PS-work

Mindestanforderungen und Beurteilungsmaßstab

Good reading knowledge of both English and German are required (additional "Habsburg" languages are welcome).

Regular attendance (maximum 2 x unexcused absences), in contrary case extra assignments are due.

The evaluation is based on the participation in class and providing peer-feedback (15%), the oral presentation of a first draft (15%) and the final paper (60%). The PS-work should be approx. 25 pages long (1.5 line spacing) comprising 10 000 words (± 5%), including footnotes, title page, table of content and bibliography.

Grading scale:

| 2: | 76-88 | Gut | Good | Above-average standard but with some errors |
| 3: | 63-75 | Befriedigend | Satisfactory | Average performance with a number of notable errors |
| 4: | 51-62 | Genügend | Adequate | Standard but with a significant number of shortcomings |
| 5: | 0-50 | Nicht genügend | Unsatisfactory | Failing grade |
