This series lecture class deals with the formation of borders between the Central American states and Mexico and border regimes in Central Europe during the 19th and 20th centuries.

It is against this backdrop that this series lecture at the University of Vienna, in cooperation with the University of Chicago, hosts the annual conference of the Cátedra Friedrich Katz.
In light of this special constellation of 2018 speakers from Mexico, Central America and Austria discuss topics related to border regimes in past and present.
Key concepts discussed will include the juxtaposition of frontiers vs. borders, central to the work of Friedrich Katz who has studied Mexico’s northern frontier at the time of the Mexican Revolution and its relevance for both Mexico and the United States; the idea of closed borders in historically intercultural spaces, such as the current idea to build a wall at the Mexican-American border or the Iron Curtain cutting through Europe over four decades; and the concept of phantom borders, i.e. the lasting impact of disappeared borders in the regions they used to separate.
