Ziele, Inhalte und Methode der Lehrveranstaltung

While Social-Democrats - Russian as Western - in the beginning of the 20th. century were democratically and internationally minded, the reality of Soviet society developed to be a Communist Party-dictatorship oriented toward an industrially developing, but self-sufficient economy, earning currency by exporting raw-materials. Early (then Communist) Polish critics have analysed the new society as "Monopoly-socialism".
The history of the Soviet Union and following 1945 the "socialist World-System" from the revolution in 1917 till the breakdown of 1989/91 will focus on global interactions in the fields of ideas, migrations, political institutions, economies and the military. Topics inter alia might be: socialist discussions about revolution and global liberation, about spontaneity and bureaucracy, about democracy and dictatorship. The >Russian idea<, Narodnichestvo. Limits and reality of the Bolshevik victory 1917. Socialism in one country, catching-up industrialisation and forced labour; Gulag. The global discussion on total war; Soviet Civil and 2nd. World-War, German attempt to turn the SU into a colony and eliminate parts of the population. Soviet victory and Confrontation to the US: Cold War. New division of world-labour and information-revolution. Imperial overstretch and new nationalism. The decision of the Communist elites to end Communism. From (semi-) periphery to (semi-)periphery ?
The course will be organised in three steps:
1. (October 16th) a general overview by the Prof.,
2. following (November 20th) common reading of Hoskings book and then
3. (December 11th and January 15th) presentations by students on special problems.
Grading will be by an essay, which may be written also following the course.
