Information

Ziele, Inhalte und Methode der Lehrveranstaltung

This course investigates architectural elements and decorative mediums exhibited in the building programs of major Islamic centres, focusing on examples from Cairo, Syria and Anatolia. The aim is to explore concepts of transregional exchange and the development of regional schools of Islamic art and architecture.
The students will be introduced to major works of architecture, and a selection of objects produced under the patronage of the Mamluks of Syria and Cairo, the Seljuk Sultanate and the principalities of Anatolia. They will be familiarised with a variety of decorative and architectural designs, in order to analyse and discuss their visuality, utilisation and movement from one centre to another.

The methodological aim of this case study is to enhance the students’ ability to analyse artistic and architectural material using combined approaches to research, obtain evidence from a variety of sources, and review the literature on the subject.
