Master students can apply for this seminar directly in the office hours of Prof. Rosenberg on September 8, 3-5 PM (probably via Zoom only). Please make an appointment at the beginning of September with Michaela Golubits (michaela.golubits@univie.ac.at).

Depending on the development of the pandemic the seminar will be either entirely in presence or partly by zoom and partly in presence. Introductions to the eye tracker and data recording must be done in person, at the lab at the department of art history. Full vaccination against Covid 19 is therefore strongly recommended.

Information

Ziele, Inhalte und Methode der Lehrveranstaltung

Visual art cannot do without the eye, just as music cannot do without the ear. Eye movements were a major topic of art literature for centuries, however, it is only recently that art history started implementing eye tracking and thus also empirical methods. The University of Vienna with its Lab for Cognitive Research in Art History is a leader in this field.
The seminar aims to introduce students of art history to eye tracking, including how to plan, design, analyze and publish empirical studies. The seminar will focus on theoretical aspects of the method while the practical elements will be covered in the mandatory exercise course. All participants will conduct their own study with the eye tracker in groups of two. Practicing teamwork is, therefore, also one of the goals of the seminar.

Art der Leistungskontrolle und erlaubte Hilfsmittel

This seminar is highly time-consuming. The exercise on empirical research practice by Zoya Dare (Tuesday 1-3 PM) is a mandatory part of the seminar.
Performance assessment will be based on the studies conducted in groups of two (always same grade for both students). It will include short oral presentations and a written paper. By registering for the course, you agree that the automated plagiarism software Turnitin will check your written submissions in Moodle.
