Ziele, Inhalte und Methode der Lehrveranstaltung

What is commonly called "Arab book painting" means the art of imagery in the context of illustrated manuscripts of Arabic language in the medieval periods of Islamic cultures. Such illustrated books survive mainly from Syria, Iraq, and Egypt. While the medium of book painting and its imagery offer fascinating parallels with book painting and figurative art of other languages and cultures in that region as well as in medieval Europe, this course focuses on Arab book painting as the primary source for the art of Arab figurative painting from the 12th and 13th centuries.
In this course, we will explore the methods of analysis and theoretical issues related to Arab miniature painting, which, like any art form, has its own unique features and characteristics. Given the connection between book painting and manuscripts, the course will address certain questions of codicology, including the analysis of digitized manuscripts, as researchers often have access only to the digital reproductions. The course would also delve into the relationship between miniatures and text, aiming to introduce various scholarly perspectives on this topic. We also shall discuss the sources that could have shaped the formal vocabulary of Arab painting and touch upon the topic of Arab visual aesthetics.
During the course, you will have the opportunity to engage with different aspects of Arab book miniatures and get acquainted with a number of manuscripts. This will enable you to apply acquired knowledge and skills in a further part, in which we discuss miniature painting in a variety of 13th-century manuscripts that illustrate one of the most popular books of medieval Arabic literature, the adventure stories of the "Maqamat" authored by the Iraqi al-Hariri n the 11th century.

Mindestanforderungen und Beurteilungsmaßstab

Mindestanforderung:
- Anwesenheitspflicht. Bei Absenz wegen Krankheit oder familiärer Ausnahmesituation ist ein schriftlicher Nachweis vorzulegen.
- Für einen positiven Abschluss der Lehrveranstaltung müssen alle Teilleistungen erbracht werden.
- Seminararbeit: Zur Sicherung der guten wissenschaftlichen Praxis kann der/die Lehrveranstaltungsleiter/in Studierende zu einem notenrelevanten Gespräch nach Abgabe der Arbeit einladen, welches positiv zu absolvieren ist.

Beurteilungsmaßstab:
- aktive Beteiligung an Diskussionen 15%
- Referat und Präsentation 30 %
- Vertiefung in Form einer schriftlichen Hausarbeit 55%

Notenschlüssel:
1 (sehr gut) 100-90 Punkte; 2 (gut) 89-81 Punkte; 3 (befriedigend) 80-71 Punkte; 4 (genügend) 70-61 Punkte; 5 (nicht genügend) 60-0 Punkte
