Information
Ziele, Inhalte und Methode der Lehrveranstaltung
The art of the decades around 1400 is often referred to with terms such as "courtly style" or "international Gothic", as its special features include the striving for aristocratic elegance, the development of luxury and the rapid spread of artistic inventions across national borders: for the period from around 1375 to 1425, it is particularly difficult to attribute works to a specific local tradition, and some have been assigned alternately to locations in France, Burgundy, Italy or Bohemia in the course of the research history. The courts competed with each other for the best artists of the time, and their relocation contributed to the spread of artistic inventions and provoked further advances that combined the strengths of different artistic centers. The focus was on more individualized representations of facial features for portraits, more realistic depictions of animals and plants, atmospheric seasonal paintings for calendar miniatures or richly furnished interior depictions.
