Ziele, Inhalte und Methode der Lehrveranstaltung

The term “Oriental Hellenism” refers to the Greek-Orthodox presence in Asia Minor and Constantinople as formed after the gradual Turkic expansion in the region from 11th c. onwards and especially under the Seljuk and Ottoman rule. The course offers a systematic overview on the cultural, ethnographic, historical and (socio)linguistic aspects of this presence while it also discusses relevant domains of research as well as (archival and other) sources which can be used for further investigation. Some of the topics to be discussed within the framework of course lectures are:

• The cultural/demographic dis/continuity of Asia Minor after the Turkic conquests and the fate of the remaining Orthodox population.
• The repopulation of Ottoman Constantinople.
• The millet system and the boundaries of communal autonomy.
• The Greek-Orthodox communities in Cappadocia and Black Sea (Pontos) region.
• An Orthodox Ottoman Elite: The Phanariots.
• The Greek-Orthodox community during the Tanzimat period.
• The Greek-Turkish war (1919-1922) and its repercussions.
• The Genocide discourse from a Greek perspective.
• The Lausanne treaty and the population exchange as a collective trauma on both sides of the Aegean.
• The Greek minority in Republican Turkey and the challenges of coexistence.
• The contemporary international role of the Ecumenical Patriarchate.

Art der Leistungskontrolle und erlaubte Hilfsmittel

Grading:

Short oral exam (40%)
Preparation of two short essays (circa max. 2000 words in sum, excluding references) selected out of a list of relevant topics. (60%)

Course languages are both English and German.

Mindestanforderungen und Beurteilungsmaßstab

Knowledge of Greek and/or Turkish is advantageous but no prerequisite.
