Information

Ziele, Inhalte und Methode der Lehrveranstaltung

Inhalt
Unlike the current tensions and ambiguities concerning its relationship to the EU, Greece has not been integral part of the political and cultural constructions of European identity but also narrowly linked to the postwar European integration project since the early 1960s. In this course, we will revisit the story of integration of the Greek state within the EEC and the EU institutions, starting by the Association Agreement between Greece and the EEC in 1961, and the application for full membership in 1975, when Greece was still an outpost of the Western powers in a Cold War setting, until the Economic and Monetary Union and the current crisis of the Eurozone.

Ziel
Adopting a critical approach to exceptionalist approaches of contemporary Greek history, our aims will be
(a) to understand the economic, political and ideological impact of the country's gradual integration to the EEC and EU institutions andEurope
(b) to grasp the character and the stakes of European integration during the last half of a century.

Methoden
The course will combine lecture classes with the study of historical documents and critical approaches concerning the construction of the European Union.
