Information

Ziele, Inhalte und Methode der Lehrveranstaltung

Aims:
What makes a golden age? Vienna at the turn of the 20th century, Florence in the Renaissance, Rome in the age of Augustus – there are some moments in history that see remarkable concentrations of culture and creativity. Archaic Ionia was one such period, seeing the developments of many characteristic innovations in Greek culture: from Homeric poetry to the first monumental Greek temples, and from sculptural traditions and the decorative arts to the birth of philosophy. In this seminar, we will examine why this happened.

Content:
Using a range of archaeological evidence (mortuary, domestic, urban, landscape) we will investigate the nature of society and social structures in archaic Ionia and the surrounding regions. What were the economic, political, and social conditions that enabled the cultural flowering of the archaic period? We will pay particular attention to the demography and population, investigating the multicultural nature of the Ionian cities. In this way, we will explore the connection between cultural diversity (in terms of population makeup and structure) and cultural innovation (in terms of Hochkultur and cultural production).

Methods:
Weekly 1.5 hour seminars. Due to the COVID-Pandemic, seminars will initially be digital. We hope to move to in-person seminars later in the semester.

Art der Leistungskontrolle und erlaubte Hilfsmittel

• Two brief oral presentations for 15 minutes each in German or English (30%)
• Active participation in weekly exercises (20%)
• Written seminar paper of 15-20 pages, not including illustrations, in German or English (50%)

Mindestanforderungen und Beurteilungsmaßstab

Since the majority of the literature is in English, appropriate language skills are required. Presence and active participation is required at a minimum of 70% of teaching sessions. Written papers must be marked positive.
