Ziele, Inhalte und Methode der Lehrveranstaltung

The course provides a systematic analysis of the grammatical structure of Standard Modern Greek (SMG). At the same time, it serves as a “gentle introduction” to fundamental linguistic concepts and synchronic descriptive/typological approaches, making it accessible to participants with little or no background in linguistics.

Key topics covered in the course include the phonological and morphological systems of SMG, morphosyntactic features (such as pre-verbal particles, finite complementation, “free” word order, information structure, and compounding), and the lexicon. Additionally, the course explores digital tools for compiling and analyzing SMG corpora.

Art der Leistungskontrolle und erlaubte Hilfsmittel

Final “take-home” and “open-book” exam (for instance in the form of a multiple choice quiz and/or short expository essays etc.)

Mindestanforderungen und Beurteilungsmaßstab

No previous knowledge of Modern Greek is required. Familiarity with the Modern Greek alphabet is desired but similarly not a prerequisite (although you will be expected after some course sessions to be able to read words and simple sentences in the Greek script). Knowledge of basic grammatical terms is presupposed.

English and German are the working languages of the course, therefore average knowledge of both is a must. Presentation-slides will be in English. Lectures will be held in English and/or German according to the course participants' requirements.

Basic grammatical/linguistic terms will be clarified in both languages.

Grading key: 55-65% = 4, 65-75% = 3, 76-89% = 2, 90-100% = 1
