Ziele, Inhalte und Methode der Lehrveranstaltung

This course is designed as a way to enable students from the University of Vienna to participate at different levels (BA, MA, PhD.) in the Erasmus Blended Intensive Program called “Carolingian Literary Lab.” The broader project is an international team-taught and “geblockt” initiative that will combine two online events (March and July, dates TBA) with a study week in Poitiers (22-26 May). The onsite component in Poitiers will concentrate on Alcuin, on Carolingian verse inscriptions, and on insular contributions to the Carolingian scene. There will be visits to libraries as well as to medieval archaeological sites.

The Carolingian Literary Lab will be taught primarily in French and in English, but students and teachers will also be able to speak their own languages (German; Italian; Spanish). The point is to communicate.

Mindestanforderungen und Beurteilungsmaßstab

Each contributing university will send a small team of students under a professor. I am coordinating and supervising the group from Vienna. We will have a scheduled jour fixe available to us (Wednesdays at 15:00-16:30), but will not be meeting every week. The top-down teaching will consist of the two online events and the week in Poitiers. I will help get students started with bibliography and some literary history. I hope to invite a few foreign Carolingian scholars to read texts with us and introduce to the problems involved. They may teach in English.

Students will need to work out an appropriate project of their own. Doctoral students will write a scholarly paper on a Carolingian topic related to the “Carolingian Literary Lab;” MA students should likewise expect to write a paper (ca. 20 pages). More junior students have the option of taking the course as a Lektüre, in which case they could choose a suitable Carolingian text (my approval required) and translate and comment on it. The Vienna group will function in German and English. The Vienna students’ final grades will be based on their active participation (active Mitarbeit) in our local jour fixe, in the events of the plenum (online events and study week, and on their written work (60%).
