Ziele, Inhalte und Methode der Lehrveranstaltung

This course will provide a selective introduction to selected modern critical approaches. It is taught by someone who does not consider herself a literary theoretician, but a philologist and historian, who is nonetheless interested in exploring literary theory as applied to Classics. Students will be expected to read three general guides to literary theory on their own: J. Culler, Literaturtheorie. Eine kurze Einführung, Stuttgart 2002, Terry Eagleton, Einführung in die Literaturtheorie, Stuttgart 2012, Thomas Schmitz, Moderne Literaturtheorie und antike Texte: Eine Einführung, Darmstadt : Wiss. Buchges. 2002. These should provide an overview of some of what is available out there. We will endeavor to walk a line between studying theory (actually theories) and studying what said theories can do for/to texts, not all of them ancient. Some of the authors and approaches may include: Psychoanalysis (Freud), Structuralism, Narratology, Intertextuality, Performance Theory, and Deconstruction. There will be opportunities to think about and work with opera and film.
