Ziele, Inhalte und Methode der Lehrveranstaltung

The lecture will discuss the main themes related to the study of Early Christianity in Austria with particular attention to the history of the discipline, its main themes and methods within the wider frame of Roman and Late Antique Archaeology. In particular the Christianisation of the provinces of Noricum and Raetia will be considered through the transformation of the Limes, settlement topography, aspects of sacred architecture, decoration, and material culture. The lectures intend also to focus on the material provided by the excavations, the input of new technologies and see through practical examples how church building evolved over time to respond to the needs of a growing Christian population, and how it was adapted to host liturgical functions, attract pilgrimage and express the identity of the local community.

Mindestanforderungen und Beurteilungsmaßstab

The assessment will consider the correct interpretation of various archaeological sources (visual and material) discussed in the lectures.
Students are required to develop the ability to organize knowledge clearly in order to answer exam questions correctly. Minimum vote for positive assessment: 51% of the number of points.
