Ziele, Inhalte und Methode der Lehrveranstaltung

This course will examine the Holocaust of the Jews of the Balkans by Nazi Germany and its accomplices. Through the critical analysis of military planning documents, official accounts, survivor narratives, laws and related literary texts, this course will provide an overview of the key themes and events of Balkan Holocaust history, situating this history within the wider framework of the Nazi attempt at the complete extermination of European Jewry. The course will begin with an exploration of the political and religious situation of Balkan Jews on the eve of the Second World War. It will subsequently explore, as separate case studies, the implementation of the ‘Final Solution’ in Albania, Bulgaria, Greece, Romania and the former Yugoslavia. Particular attention will be paid to the questions of antisemitic persecution, Jewish resistance and the collaboration of local Balkan elites and populations in the expropriation, deportation and murder of Jews. It will close with a reflection on the social and cultural legacies of these events.
