Information

Ziele, Inhalte und Methode der Lehrveranstaltung

In this course we will be dealing with regional as well as social dialects of Modern Greek that are (or were) spoken within today’s Greece, Cyprus and beyond. At the same time the course offers a. a gentle introduction into dialectology and sociolinguistics and b. an overview of the regions where the dialects are/were located and of the groups which speak them. Regional dialects include the Cretan and Cypriot varieties, the "archaic" Tsakonian (a descendant of the Ancient Greek Doric dialect), 'Grecanico' and 'Griko' spoken in Southern Italy, and the Minor Asian Cappadocian and Pontic dialects. Social dialectal varieties include the 'rembetiko' jargon, the Athenian slang or the queer ‘Kaliarda’.
During the course we will refer to the basic relevant literature, we will examine short texts and we will have a look on the state-of-the-art research as well as the existing attempts to safeguard and/or revitalize the endangered dialects. Additionally, we will have the opportunity to discuss with some scholars conducting research on Modern Greek dialectal varieties.
