The aim of the lectures is to discuss the archaeology, art and architecture of North Africa in Late Antiquity, with attention to the impact of Christianity on the transformation of Urban and rural centres of the Southerns shores of the Mediterranean Sea.
Content:
North Africa played an important role in Late Antiquity especially in the transmission of the Christian religion and the birth of monasticism. According to tradition, the emergence of Christianity in North Africa is associated with the evangelization of Egypt by the apostle Mark. The archaeological evidence allows to trace two important centres: one in Cyrenaica (under the influence of Alexandria) and one in Carthage (under the influence of Rome). The lectures will discuss the topographic development of the main centres, their fortification, the main monuments (civic and ecclesiastic), elements of decoration, sculpture and floor mosaic.
