090112 SE Architecture in context in Late Antiquity (2021W)

The Seminar intends to draw the students' attention to the architectural monuments of the 4th -8th century. The rich and diverse building traditions of the classical past that inspired the development of the first models will be addressed, together with the introduction of different uses and functions. The discussion will consider the formal typological analysis of the monuments, their classification within a specific context (religious or secular). Students will be encouraged to reflect on patronage, environmental conditions, sensory properties, internal and external decoration, and finally on the historical and archaeological value of the imagined and described architecture.
Students will receive a list of topics to choose from at the first course lesson.
