Information

Ziele, Inhalte und Methode der Lehrveranstaltung

The picturesque mountains and plains of central Greece were dotted with sanctuaries that merged into sacred landscapes, which we will explore in this excursion.

Starting in northern Attica, we plan to visit the sanctuary of Nemesis at the deme centre of Rhamnous and follow ancient pilgrims in search of oracles and healing to the Amphiareion of Oropos. In Euboea, our group will puzzle over the mysterious heroa of Lefkandi and Eretria. In Boeotia, we will immerse ourselves in the mystery cult of the Kabeireion near Thebes, before travelling to the Valley of the Muses and the Ptoion in the mountains, famous for its oracle, and ascending to the Temple of Zeus Basileus in Lebadea, left half-finished as a colossal ruin. Our journey culminates in trips to the international sanctuary of Delphi and to Kalapodi with its age-old cult, but along the way, we also visit ancient settlements through the centuries, massive Mycenaean fortifications and great museums.

Art der Leistungskontrolle und erlaubte Hilfsmittel

A seminar on 13 March 2024 prepares the group for the excursion. Each student works on a specific topic during the semester and presents the results on the excursion. Together with the group, we will discuss the topic based on the monuments and buildings on site and in the wider landscape.

Assessment will include a presentation during the field trip (50%), a handout (25%) and participation in the group discussions (25%).

Mindestanforderungen und Beurteilungsmaßstab

The course will be graded as "attended"/"not attended". The course and field trip are bilingual.

Prüfungsstoff

See above.

Literatur

A list of general literature on the regions and sites we visit will be provided in the seminar. We will assist students in finding specific literature on their individual topic.
