Ziele, Inhalte und Methode der Lehrveranstaltung

This course focuses on the figure of photography and photography-related language and tropes that we find in literary texts since the nineteenth century. We will study a rich theoretical and philosophical corpus in various ways related to photography (Walter Benjamin, Henri Bergson, Siegfried Kracauer, Roland Barthes, Jacques Derrida), and move on to consider the implications of the new technology for literature’s understanding of its own modes of representation. We will work with texts by Charles Baudelaire, Marcel Proust, Virginia Woolf, and the Greek poets Constantine Cavafy, Georges Seferis, Andreas Embeirikos, Yiannis Ritsos (presenting in parallel, where applicable, their own photographic collections and their relation to the political and cultural constitution of Greece). Major topics that are addressed at the intersection of literary and photographic language include memory and forgetting, perception and knowledge, death and afterlife.

Art der Leistungskontrolle und erlaubte Hilfsmittel

Participation in the discussion of textual sources, final short oral presentation, submission of a final paper on one of the topics of the course, written in English or German.

Prüfungsstoff

30%: Participation in class discussion
30%: Oral Presentation
40%: Essay of 2.500-3000 words (footnotes and Bibliography not included). Submission via email. Submission date: 31 August 2021
