120002 SE MEd 03: SE Applied Research Seminar (2020W)

This course is designed to offer an insight into how different research methods, approaches and tools can be used to investigate the role of individual differences in the learning of additional languages. The module aims to develop students’ ability to interpret, evaluate and apply methods for examining factors that can influence second language learning. In the module students will gain hands-on experience in collecting, transcribing, describing, coding, analyzing and discussing data, preparing students to carry out empirical investigations on second language motivation, language learning anxiety, willingness to communicate, learning strategies and cognitive factors. Students will learn how to identify research problems and questions about individual differences in language learning, how to select appropriate methods of answering research questions, how to ensure the validity and reliability of research and to use a variety of tools for data collection and analysis. Specific research tools focused on will include questionnaires, interviews, verbal protocols, second language data elicitation and cognitive test tools.

Participants will develop their ability to engage in academic discussions by participating in discussion and improve their critical thinking and writing skills by carrying out the course assignments. Students will also gain hands-on experience in SLA research by conducting a small-scale group project and develop their presentation skills as part of the group presentation sessions.

Each theme will be introduced by short lectures and readings which will be followed by group discussion activities. Students will work in groups and carry out a small-scale research project and present it to the class in simulated conference sessions. The course will provide guidance on the projects.
